All parents must complete a preference form in addition to registering your child for the test. These are distributed through primary schools or available through your home Local Authority. The Grammar Schools in Birmingham does not issue preference forms.
Registering for the test
As part of the registration process, you will need to upload a photograph of your child. This is used to verify your child's identity at the test venue and will be checked again should your child be successful in gaining a place at one of the grammar schools. Before beginning your registration, ensure you have a suitable photograph available on your device ready to upload:
- Photographs should clearly show your child's face and have been taken within the last month prior to registering photograph, taken within the last six months, of the candidate's face (head and shoulders).
- The upload needs to be in jpg, jpeg, png, or gif format and must be less than two megabytes in size.
- The picture upload will take place after submitting the main PDF form.
You will need a .pdf reader to complete the form such as the free Adobe Reader.

Once you have submitted this application, you will receive an email to confirm it has been submitted successfully. You will also receive a further confirmation within 14 working days.
The website for 'the Grammar Schools in Birmingham' is available by clicking here.
The entrance test for 2024 entry will be held on Saturday 16th September 2023.
There are two papers of approximately 45 minutes.
It is likely that two sessions will be held (AM and PM) and you should therefore plan to keep the whole of Saturday 16th September free from other commitments. If the test is held over two sessions, your child will be allocated to a session and you will receive confirmation of this in early September.
The papers will be divided into smaller, individually timed sections that test:
- Verbal reasoning
- Non verbal reasoning
- Mathematics and
- Reading comprehension/literacy skills
Children will write their answers in the test booklets and most of the questions will be multiple choice. The marks will be standardised to take account of differences in age and then added together.
In order to familiarise yourself with the test, we hope you find the following information useful:
More information regarding the test can be found here on the Birmingham Grammar Schools website.
You will receive your child's test score on, or as close to, Friday 20th October 2023, by email.
Please note this is not an offer of a place. The letter will indicate the scores required for admission for each of the schools in the previous three years. Parents/carers can then decide whether or not to include any of the Grammar Schools in Birmingham on their home Local Authority (LA) preference form.
Offers will be made by the Local Authority on Friday 1st March 2024 (or the next working day) and full details are given in your Local Authority booklet or available online.
Parents/carers will only receive one offer and will not hear from any school unable to offer their child a place.
If you have not received your child's letter informing you of their test score by Friday 21st October 2023, please email firstname.lastname@example.org to request a further copy.
Offers will be made by your Local Authority on Friday 1st March 2024 for September 2024 intake.
All Local Authorities must operate an equal preference system so, if your child meets the criteria for two or more schools, the Local Authority will offer a place at the school ranked highest on your preference form. Therefore, if you put a grammar school first on your preference form but your child is not offered a place, you will not put at risk the chance of them being offered a place at any other school you have listed. Your child’s application for other schools will be treated in the same way as every other application. For example, it will depend on the distance between your home and the school for most non-selective schools.
Your child will automatically be placed on the waiting list for any schools listed higher than the school offered on your preference form providing they have achieved the qualifying score or above.
Details on the procedure to follow should your child be ill on the morning of the entrance test will be included in the letter posted to your home address in early September.
If your child sits the test despite being unwell, no allowance can be made to the test score achieved to take into account the effect of any illness.
You must contact the office on 0121 415 6004 if your child is unwell. You must contact us on the morning of the test.
If your child is unable to sit tests on Saturdays for religious reasons we are able to arrange an alternative test day. You must tick the relevant box when registering your child's details online for the test and supply a supporting letter from their religious leader if you would like us to do this. An alternative date will not be offered without a supporting letter. This letter must be submitted no later than 30 June 2023.
If your child has a disability and/or requires special resources to sit the test, please write to The Grammar Schools in Birmingham as early as possible, to request a disability form (A1) to complete. If applying via the online application form, you must tick the relevant box and request a form (A1) from email@example.com. It is the parents/carers responsibility to ensure that this form (A1) has been requested and returned by the deadline.
You will be asked to describe your child's disability and to supply medical evidence. A panel of experts will meet following the A1 form deadline to assess each special request.
The deadline to return A1 forms is Wednesday 14th June 2023.
If this form has not been completed and returned to the Grammar Schools in Birmingham by the deadline no special arrangements can be considered for your child in this test.
Please note that this date is earlier that the test registration deadline and that information provided after the panel has met cannot be considered.
